“Leading the charge in wellness”
Wow….what a weekend! We just celebrated the official Global Wellness Day anniversary which was commemorated this past Saturday, June 8th. First celebrated in 2012, Global Wellness Day was established in Turkey as the “first” day dedicated to living well, and has now been accepted worldwide. With the recognized slogan “One day can change your whole life,” Global Wellness Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of June every year as an international day. Although GWD has acquired a specific annual day of celebration, the message that was declared to the world was that the value of our lives must be thought-out and recognized all year. The need to pause and think, even if adopted for just one day of the year, it needs to be free from stress and bad habits and have the ability to make peace within ourselves. This one day offers the opportunity to raise awareness about living well and increase motivation, so it’s not just for this one day, but a jump start for the remaining 364 days of the year.
In 2018 GWD was celebrated in more than 130 countries and at over 5000 different locations. We can’t wait to see the numbers for 2019! The world has certainly caught on since 2012 and wellness has become a world-wide undertaking and being healthy has now shifted into necessity. And rightly so… what an amazing direction for humankind. It’s an awakening! Wellness is an active process of becoming conscious of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. It’s more than being free from illness, it’s a dynamic process of change and growth by creating a state of physical, mental and social well-being, identified by health, happiness and richness.
In support of advocating wellness, the FSA was recently invited to speak in a Spa Directors Roundtable Panel at The Ultra Wellness Summit by Questex Travel Group. This conference connects travel agents with luxury hotel properties for one-on-one appointments, networking, and education incentivized to cut a new path into the future of luxury travel. I was honored to be part of this wellness panel along with top spa leaders Derek Hofmann, Four Seasons Orlando, Kimberly DeOrsey, nSpa Marriott Delray Beach and Bill Toth, Margaritaville Orlando. Our panel spoke about spa experiences and the impact and importance of wellness in spa properties today.
In many instances, wellness has been referred to as being a “top trend” and it’s impressive how quickly the need for a better life has been endorsed. However I personally don’t like to think of it as just being a trend, which has the implication of being short lived. I prefer to think of wellness as a way of life, being everlasting and having staying power. Wellness has been welcomed into many industries, organizations, institutions, governments, schools and welding into society.
The most important goal of wellness is the ability to achieve the greatest possible quality of life. The aspect of individual health that is within your control is personal choice which is the only factor prevalent in a person’s ability to live a healthy lifestyle.
“All of us would like be healthier, to look better, and to live well both physically and spiritually.” – GWD
