Our featured Spa Spotlight focuses on an accomplished, talented, exceedingly creative and highly adored Spa Director, as well as a delightful friend to many in the spa community. With high regards to his outstanding achievements and work ethic, we are proud to feature Mitchell Berkman this month. We are honored to have him serve as our Chair for the FSA Events Committee. In his own words…a bit about Mitchell:
“Ah, the glamorous life of a Spa Director in a 5-Star Property!
But seriously, folks, if we were solving world hunger, lowering the carbon footprint of humankind, or curing cancer, I’d take the title of my bio a little more seriously. The truth is, we do all those things in our own personal way. Here is how one guy in a great job does it: My trajectory started as a so-so aerobics instructor at the YMCA in Rome, Italy, in 1986. I didn’t know a thing about spas or fitness, just needed a job and wanted to stay in Italy longer than my tourist visa allowed. In a rapid succession over the next 30 years…I got AFAA certified, starred in a TV Fitness show, started working at spas, moved back to the US, got a job at the Golden Door Spa at Sea, saw 55 countries in 3 years, learned a lot about luxury spas, moved to NYC, started a personal training company, moved to St. Thomas, USVI, survived a cat 5 hurricane, forgot all about spas, moved to Appalachia, got a business degree at 37, worked for Universal Companies, learned to love spas, got hired as a spa director in Naples, really learned a lot about spas, got recruited elsewhere, and again, and again, got married, recruited again, and now I’m trying to keep my sanity during a 20 million dollar renovation at my current spa, Porto Vita’s Villa Grande Club in Aventura. All the way through this awesome ride that I call my career, I remembered how important it is to carve out a little time for myself, use less plastic, and find great causes to rally my team around like Global Wellness Day & Breast Cancer Awareness. So, there’s my story and I am honored every single day to be a part of it.
