October has always represented the heart of the fall season, especially with my New York roots. While living in New York, this season was the time of year that I loved most. With weather at its best, fall color leaves blanketed the ground, and I anticipated the wonderful holidays coming our way. I always felt that spirit of love in the air.
Now that I live in Florida, the fall season still signifies very special feelings filled with that love and anticipation for the holidays and a spectacular season coming our way, especially in our spa universe.
This year, we all have certainly been challenged. We have experienced a devastating force of nature with hurricanes hitting Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico that have left so many distressed, disrupted, and shattered. In addition, our hearts were broken by the mass shooting at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, home of the annual ISPA conferences, which makes us especially sensitive to our spa and Las Vegas community for having to endure such a tragedy.
Checking in on our friends and colleagues asking to mark ourselves safe from the mass shootings, we sent whole-hearted messages to those involved or affected by the incident. We also felt the need to give back and help our community through the devastation brought on by Hurricane Irma. The Florida Spa Association will be donating proceeds from our upcoming fall event at the Nobu Eden Roc to a local charity for the Florida Keys, as well as our neighbors in Puerto Rico. Although this doesn’t solve the many problems that now exist, it contributes toward relief and aid and comes from the hearts of our Florida friends and vendors participating at our event.
Yes, this year, fall has thrown us a curve ball, but we have also learned how strong we are as a spa community. We have come together to help each other find our healing journey. Regardless of how we circumnavigate the different phases of grief, it is always the right way. Life is a gift and we never know when or how it will end, so we need to embrace it and appreciate people that surround us, as well as honor ourselves and those that love us.
Amidst catastrophic situations and tragedy, we must continue to find the many ways that we can come together and unite. When overwhelming circumstances are thrown at us, it reminds how important it is to love ourselves, appreciate the little things in life, lend a helping hand, and show love to those around us.
